The Penn’s Civilian mentor program at Steel High is a peer mentorship program designed to increase the social and academic achievements of student participants. The program model pairs academically proficient junior and senior mentors with 7^th and 8^th grade students whose performance indicates a need for additional support. Through a varied series of peer interventions, mentors will exemplify model behavior and provide social and academic support pursuant to the particular needs of their mentee.

Modes of intervention

Roller to Roller Engagement:

The core component of the mentor program is Roller to Roller engagement. Participant pairs are required to meet for a minimum of one hour each week. The hour requirement can be accumulated via a series of meetings. Three 20 minute meetings are ideally recommended. The 1 hour requirement can also be achieved via alternate modes of intervention.

Group Activities:

1.) Participant pairs interested in meeting as a small group are encouraged to organize as a sub group and complete a group project. A selection of projects will be offered. Additional projects can be recommended by the sub group.

2.) Each month the entire program will participate in a scheduled event or activity. An example of such an event or activity would be “A day at Hershey Park.” These events will count toward the time requirement of Roller to Roller Engagement.

Additional items:

Mentors are required to maintain a log of time spent to be submitted on a weekly basis. Mentors must also maintain a proficient grades throughout the program year.
